Creation of Regina
2025-26
Transforming the imagery of Michaelangelo’s Creation of Adam, I depict Regina, a trans woman, in a moment of tenderness between herself and the person she once was. Adam, a depiction of her before she transitioned, reaches out to the person she knows she is. God, the person she has created and become, reaches towards who she once was, letting her know the possibilities she has in the making of herself. I use the story of creation in order to depict the power of engaging in the creation of yourself. This work was made in collaboration with Regina R.,. transforming her own queer and trans history into part of a new queer canon. My work is interested in appropriating the idea of history paintings into queer and trans self-creation narratives. This piece was featured as the cover of The Bureau of Queer Art’s publication, Volume 13: The Queer Gospel.
